In Spring 2025, I conducted a student case study in my classroom. I noticed a problem behavior in one of my students that I wanted to change.
Observation
I conducted a 45-minute observation in which I observed my student and took Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) notes to attempt to figure out the function of behavior. I noticed that whenever this student was prompted with work, they would often disengage and choose to engage in other tasks such as drawing/sketching. This led me to the intervention I chose to implement
Intervention
In order to help this student keep engaged with their coursework, I implemented an intervention with a reward-based structure. Whenever this student successfully completed a worksheet along with the class, they would receive a blank comic strip to draw on during their free-time. The goal for this was to increase this student's motivation by linking his academic tasks to a preferred activity, helping to create a structured balance between work and creativity. By offering the comic strips as an incentive rather than a distraction, the goal is to encourage this student to stay focused on his work while still allowing space for his artistic interests.
Results
After implementing this intervention, I have seen moderately successful results. On most days, the student has shown an increased level of engagement in tasks as they are seeking the comic strip reward. However, on other days they are not as motivated by the reward and continue to disengage. Possible modifications to the intervention in order to see a greater result would be to alter the schedule of reinforcement, offering short breaks during instruction, or offering different rewards for engagement.
